About the Opportunities

Harbour City Ferries now has an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Fitter to join their team in Sydney on a full-time basis.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will be learning how to maintain and repair fleet vessels and assisting with general duties, this will be under the guidance of your supervisors. Additionally, you will complete a combination of on ­the ­job and off ­the ­job training at the Balmain Shipyard.

Your duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Participating proactively in a training plan;
  • Working collaboratively & closely with other tradespersons;
  • Learning shipbuilding, maintenance & repair techniques; and
  • Performing risk management tasks and safety related training.

To be successful in this Apprenticeship, you will enrol in (and must complete) Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade course.

Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  •    Willingness to learn and attend course requirements for Trade Certification, Trade Rights Certification, accredited qualifications and participate in all training as defined;
  •    Willingness to learn maintenance, repair and fault diagnosis of all shipboard mechanical systems;
  •    Willingness to learn how to read and understand schematic drawings and workshop manuals;
  •    Willingness to learn shipbuilding and repair techniques;
  •    An interest in gaining marine experience; and
  •    Ability to work in a shipyard environment.

Harbour City Ferries are seeking an applicant who has strong oral and written communication skills, as well as a positive attitude and commitment to continuous improvement.

While this is not essential, a basic understanding of Marine Safety Legislation and Regulations will be highly regarded.
